Third Spaces

The unincorporated area is predominantly made up of Black, Latino and Asian residents who face barriers to obtaining relevant, bilingual and affordable wellness options in their neighborhood.

Mental Health for All brings third spaces and culturally sensitive mental health support to the Unincorporated Eden Area. Third spaces are an alternative support system and network that helps bridge the gap between residents and service providers. Though third spaces like bonfires and chats over coffee, Mental Health for All fills a much needed gap in the Eden Area, where spaces to gather without the expectation to spend money are few and far in between.

How We Got Here

In a polarized climate where conversations about safety, mental health, and public spending are often simplified, communities like the Eden Area are frequently spoken about without the people who organized solutions. The timeline documents how residents identified needs, created their own healing spaces, and pushed institutions to respond when systems failed to reach them.

Recording that sequence provides accountability and prevents community-led work from being misrepresented as sudden, unnecessary, or disconnected from policy change. Preserving these events ensures future residents and decision-makers understand that progress came from sustained organizing, protecting our history from misinformation and erasure.
