Housing Justice

Eden Renters United is building renter power across the Eden area, one neighbor and one block at a time. We work together to improve the health of our housing and the wellbeing of our neighbors.

ERU empowers neighbors through rights education that emphasizes how to exercise those rights as safely and effectively as possible. We build networks of care and belonging across buildings, mobile home parks, and single family rentals so no one and no community feels alone. We Eden renters to organize around shared interests through sharing stories, getting educated and taking action.

To accompany our base-building efforts, ERU uses community surveys to systematize our understanding of the issues impacting our communities towards identifying gaps in policy that need to be addressed. This community research helps us identify what protections and programs to prioritize.

Report

In the Shadows of Eden: Rising Rents, Evictions, and Substandard Living Conditions in Alameda County

Our first Eden-area-wide survey was conducted in the spring of 2023 and resulted in our first report titled, In the Shadows of Eden: Rising Rents, Evictions, and Substandard Living Conditions in Alameda County. This report details the widespread nature and negative impacts of habitability issues, rising rents, and landlord harassment, which land most harshly on families living in single-family homes due to gaps in state law.

From this report, ERU identified five policy recommendations including:

  • Strengthen rent stabilization with a Rent Board
  • Proactive rental inspections program which would place the onus of habitability on the County
  • Local just cause protections that would strengthen and address gaps in state
  • Legal aid to keep our families housed
  • A registry of all rental units so we know who owns and operates our land and housing here in Eden
